On behalf of New Zealanders DOC looks after about one third of New Zealand's land area protected for scenic, scientific, recreational, historic or cultural reasons.

New Zealand’s freshwater ecosystems range from glaciers and seepages in the mountains, down to lowland rivers and streams that flow into estuaries.
