Pekapeka (short- and long-tailed bat)

Status: nationally endangered

At the Eglinton valley site, populations of both of New Zealand's two remaining species of bat have been growing over the last three years with possum, rat and stoat control:

  • Short-tailed bat: found only in New Zealand. Spending much of its time foraging on the forest floor on folded wings, this bat is also unusual in the bat world for being both a fruit-eater and an insectivore.

  • Long-tailed bat: of an Australasian family of aerial insectivores. Typical of this group, this bat uses its webbed tail to scoop up prey on the wing.
