Gillespie Pass Track

  • The VHF radio at the Young River Mouth has been removed.
  • Ice and snow present on the Gillespie Pass - alpine skills and equipment recommended.
  • Unstable slip in the Young Valley - caution required
  • A dam that formed in the North Branch of Young Valley in 2007 still poses a potential risk to trampers. The valley should be avoided during periods of heavy rain.
  • High river track available from Blue Pools carpark to Young Valley river mouth.

Rees/Dart Track

  • The bridge over Snowy Creek has been removed for winter.
  • Caution is required on the Rees Dart tracks due to flood damage. Two sections of track have been washed away and alternate high water routes have been cut and marked.
  • Caution is required for 1 km above Shelter Rock Hut due to river erosion of the track. An alternate high water track has been cut and marked in this location.
  • Caution is required below Sandy Bluff for 1 km due to river erosion of Sandy Flat. An alternate high water track has been cut and marked in this location. 
  • River surges possible, Dredge Flat; Lower Dart Valley. Trampers are advised not to linger along the river edge or in the low lying areas between Sandy and Chinamans Bluffs.
  • 25 Mile Hut (OTMC) is suitable only for emergency accommodation, due to its derelict condition.
  • Whitbourn Track - bridge crossing the Dart River to this track has been destroyed; a new bridge will not be constructed this summer season - river crossing skills are currently required. There is slip damage on the track itself.

Greenstone/Caples Track

  • Windfalls present on track, care required.
  • A washout approximately three kilometres north of Greenstone Hut can be bypassed on a scree slop - caution required.
  • Major slip approximately 1.5 hours before McKellar Hut, Greenstone valley side - caution required.

Other facilities and services

  • Restricted Rural Fire Season - fire by permit only. BBQs in properly constructed containers fuelled by gas or electricity permitted without permit.
  • Aspiring Hut: Off Peak facilities - No Hut warden, radio or gas cooking facilities available. 
  • Queenstown Regional Visitor Centre:  8:30am - 4.30pm Mon-Fri. Closed Sat-Sun
  • Mt Aspiring National Park Visitor Centre: 8:30am - 5:00pm Mon-Fri, 9.30am-4.00pm Sat, closed Sunday and closed daily 12-12.30pm for lunch.
  • Makarora Visitor Centre: Closed for winter - interpretation room open Mon-Fri
