Getting there
Puketi and Omahuta forest is easily accessible from the Hokianga harbour and the Bay of Islands. You can access Omahuta Kauri Sanctuary, the walk's location, from State Highway One. It is signposted a few kilometers south of Mangamuka Bridge.

Description
This is a three-minute easy path to a stump and head of one of the largest kauri ever felled in the forest.

This is a standard campsite in the Bay of Islands area.
Set in the Puketi Recreation area of the Puketi-Omahuta Forest, one of the largest continuous tracts of native forest in Northland. You need to book this hut.
Plan and prepare
Please drive carefully on Omahuta Sanctuary Road – it is very narrow in places.
Carry warm, waterproof clothing, and food and drink, even on short walks. Stout shoes or walking boots are advisable.
No dogs due to risks to wildlife.

- Track is mostly well formed, some sections may be steep, rough or muddy
- Suitable for people with low to moderate fitness and abilities
- Clearly sign posted. Stream and river crossings are bridged
