Tapotupotu Bay to Sandy Bay

Time: 1 hr 40 min

This section of the track affords stunning coastal views back to Spirits Bay as you walk, and views of the Cape Reinga lighthouse. Sandy Bay is a lovely beach for swimming, fishing or relaxing, and has a stream.

The track exits the far end of the beach at Tapotupotu and climbs steeply for a lovely view back towards the east along the coast. You will then descend quickly to Sandy Bay.

Sandy Bay to Cape Reinga

Time: 45 min

On this section you exit Sandy Bay at the far end of the beach. From here, the track climbs steeply and quickly to Cape Reinga. Be prepared for cars, buses and lots of tourists! Toilets are available here.

Notice the area off the lighthouse where the seas meet, and catch the views of the Three Kings Islands towards the north/northwest.

This track from Tapotupotu Bay to Cape Reinga forms part of the Te Paki Coastal Track.

Getting there

Cape Reinga and Te Paki are located at the northernmost area of New Zealand on the small, narrow Aupouri Peninsula, approximately 60 km north of Kaitaia. Just follow State Highway 1 north. From Te Paki onwards, follow Cape Reinga Road.

Cape Reinga Road is an unsealed road and gets very busy over the summer months.  Please drive slowly and take extra caution.

You have vehicle access to Tapotupotu (the turn off from Cape Reinga Road to Tapotupotu is signposted) and, at the other end of the track, Cape Reinga car-park.

Help stop kauri dieback

Kauri dieback disease is killing our native kauri. It spreads by soil movement, but you can help prevent it.

  • Stay on the track and off kauri roots.
  • Clean your gear before and after visiting kauri forests.

Visit the kauri dieback website for more information on how you can help.
